Basic Color Theory

To begin watch the following presentation:

Write in your notebook:
  • which are the primary colors?
  • which are the secondary colors?
  • what are warm colors, cool colors, and complementary colors?

To continue we are going to see a series of videos that serve to explain: what do colors mean

Pause for a moment and think, what does the color green symbolize? What does the color red symbolize? What senses and feelings do you associate with those colors? Can you think of another meaning of another color? What about the color black, what does it symbolize?

Once you have thought about it a bit, watch the videos created by Maria Claudia Cortes (it’s a shame her website is no longer working)

Did you like the videos? Have you learned any associations that you did not know before?

The current project consists in creating a visual summary of the meanings of one color.

For this you are going to choose your favorite color (it does not have to be a color mentioned in one of the previous videos), and you are going to think about different meanings of this color (minimum 3).

What does this project consist of?

▻On a piece of paper, or drawing paper, you are going to create an image that shoes the meaning of the color you chose.

▻You can use glue to add drawings, pictures, colored paper, or you can draw, write (using the cool letters we have been  practicing)

▻When I see your drawing-collage I should be able to see the most important meanings of the color you have chosen.

¿Has aprendido alguna asociación que no conocías?

Starry Night. Adapting works of art (1ºC & 1ºD)

For the final task of the course we are going to do a drawing using all the things you have learned.

We are going to draw our own version of Starry Night by Van Gogh.

Vincent Van Gogh.  La noche estrellada, 1889. Óleo sobre lienzo

For this we are going to think about what our nights will be like this summer, and we are going to imagine one that we like.

Camping, lying next to our tent, looking at the stars? At the beach with friends? In our house looking out the window at the starry sky? Think about it!

From here we are going to draw a version which takes a little inspiration from Van Gogh (but is not a copy of it).

So that we understand what an adaptation of a drawing consists of, we are going to look at the example by Equipo Crónica of Las Meninas by Velázquez. Look, here is the painting by Velázquez.

And now we are going to look at the version by Equipo Crónica (you can see more of their paintings HERE, I can tell you, they are very funny).

I think you can see that there are some elements which are similar to the original painting, and others which have changed a lot. Look at it carefully, it is a very fun version.

Well this is what you have to do. Think about which elements of Starry Night you feel like keeping, and which you would like to change.

Look, for example, how the tobacco brand Camel was inspired by the same painting to make the cover for their cigarette packs: (smoking is bad for your health, don't do it).

Camel Art Collection

Camel Art Collection
Pay attention to how they worked as now we are going to do, they have kept some things but they have changed others.

HERE you can see more cigarette packs in the series, and the paintings from which they were inspired.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO ORGANISE OURSELVES

First do a sketch in pencil, a plan for how you are going to adapt Van Gogh's night into your own night. You must dedicate a bit of time to thinking about it, but the drawing itself should not be elaborate.

Send me the sketch, we will talk about it, and after that you can begin the drawing.

We are going to work on drawing paper (or what you have in your house), and it is freestyle (use the technique you feel like!)

It can be horizontal or vertical... it depends on your idea.

This is the final task: It must be in my email by the deadline of 5th of June.

CÓMO VAMOS A ORGANIZARNOS

Positive Space - Negative Space (1ºC y 1ºD)

We are going to start a new task using these themes:
⇾Lines
⇾Positive and negative space

We have already played a little with lines when we were looking at Cavandoli, then we were thinking of their shape and thickness.

In relation to positive and negative space. The idea is that the positive space is that of the figure and the negative space is that of the surrounding area of the figure.

Said like this it sounds a bit odd, but look, in this example you can see it quite well:

Photo of a stall--Photo of a stall with the positive space painted in black--Photo of a stall with the negative space painted in black

This is something that is used a lot in art, for example:

The bird on the left is marked out by the positive space and the one on the right by the negative space.

In this video there is more explanation (you only need to watch up to 2 minutes 42 seconds) and it includes works from various artists who pay attention to negative and positive space in their drawings:

Good, well now here is our brief:
Last year we did a project called "Endangered Species", I imagine you have seen it by the entrance of the school because it has been there for some time.

The theme was "species in danger of extinction", and they tried to draw animals that were in danger of extinction... but they didn't draw the animals... instead they marked them out by using negative space.

The idea, which was that of the previous course's students, was to draw them like this so that we imagined what the world would be like without them. For this reason they focused on drawing, in the negative space, everything that is making them dissappear.

Pay attention to what we have here, both an element of drawing using negative space, and a line drawing, there aren't blocks of colour, everything has been rendered using only lines.

Don you know which animal is this?
This year we are going to turn it around. Have you read or seen on the TV that this year, as the humans are not on the streets or the motorways, the animals are returning? Deer are appearing on the beaches, wild boar in the cities...

Well this is the theme of this project: How does our environment change when all the people are in their houses? You can think of animals, forests, traffic, school - how would it be without us? - the parks, the sport centre. It is important that you think of the good and the bad aspects of us not being there and you think how to represent this.

Today we are going to think and do sketches in our books. You have to send me a photo. Plan what you are going to draw with negative space and what you are going to draw with lines, and explain it to me in the email that you send to me.

Tomorrow and next week we will do the drawing.

Like always, drawing paper if it is possible, a margin of 1cm, colours and felt-tip pen. Enjoy the process, take a photo and send it to me when it is finished.

Espacio positivo-Espacio negativo

Bien, pues ahora viene nuestra propuesta:
