Positive Space - Negative Space (1ºC y 1ºD)

We are going to start a new task using these themes:

⇾Positive and negative space

We have already played a little with lines when we were looking at Cavandoli, then we were thinking of their shape and thickness. 

In relation to positive and negative space. The idea is that the positive space is that of the figure and the negative space is that of the surrounding area of the figure.

Said like this it sounds a bit odd, but look, in this example you can see it quite well:

This is something that is used a lot in art, for example:

 The bird on the left is marked out by the positive space and the one on the right by the negative space.

Good, well now here is our brief:

Last year we did a project called "Endangered Species", I imagine you have seen it by the entrance of the school because it has been there for some time. 

The theme was "species in danger of extinction", and they tried to draw animals that were in danger of extinction... but they didn't draw the animals... instead they marked them out by using negative space.

The idea, which was that of the previous course's students, was to draw them like this so that we imagined what the world would be like without them. For this reason they focused on drawing, in the negative space, everything that is making them dissappear.

Pay attention to what we have here, both an element of drawing using negative space, and a line drawing, there aren't blocks of colour, everything has been rendered using only lines.

Don you know which animal is this?

This year we are going to turn it around. Have you read or seen on the TV that this year, as the humans are not on the streets or the motorways, the animals are returning? Deer are appearing on the beaches, wild boar in the cities...

Well this is the theme of this project: How does our environment change when all the people are in their houses? You can think of animals, forests, traffic, school - how would it be without us? - the parks, the sport centre. It is important that you think of the good and the bad aspects of us not being there and you think how to represent this.

Today we are going to think and do sketches in our books. You have to send me a photo. Plan what you are going to draw with negative space and what you are going to draw with lines, and explain it to me in the email that you send to me.

Tomorrow and next week we will do the drawing. 

Like always, drawing paper if it is possible, a margin of 1cm, colours and felt-tip pen. Enjoy the process, take a photo and send it to me when it is finished.

Espacio positivo-Espacio negativo

Vamos a iniciar un nuevo trabajo utilizando dos temas:

⇾Espacio positivo-negativo

Ya jugamos un poco con la línea cuando estuvimos viendo a Cavandoli, ya pensamos en su forma y en su grosor.

En cuanto al espacio positivo-negativo. La idea es que el espacio positivo es el de la figura, y el espacio negativo es el espacio que hay alrededor de ella.

Esto así dicho es un poco extraño, pero mirad, en este ejemplo se ve bastante bien:

Esto es algo que se usa mucho en arte, por ejemplo:

El pájaro de la izquierda está definido por su espacio positivo, y el de la derecha por su espacio negativo.

En el vídeo que viene a continuación (solo hace falta que veáis hasta el minuto 2,42) viene una explicación y obras de varios artistas que son conscientes de los espacios positivos y negativos en sus dibujos:



Bien, pues ahora viene nuestra propuesta:
El año pasado hicimos un trabajo llamado "Endangered Species", me imagino que lo habréis visto a la entrada del instituto porque ha estado colgado mucho tiempo.

El tema fue "especies en peligro de extinción", y se trataba de dibujar animales que estuvieran en peligro de extinción... pero no dibujarlos... sino definirlos mediante su espacio negativo.

La idea, que fue de los alumnos del curso pasado, fue dibujarlos así para que nos imagináramos cómo sería el mundo sin ellos. Y por eso se concentraron en dibujar, en el espacio negativo, todo aquello que los está haciendo desaparecer.

Fijaos en que tenemos un elemento dibujado mediante su espacio negativo, y un dibujo de líneas, no hay manchas de color, todo se ha resuelto usando solamente líneas.

¿Sabéis qué animal es?

Este año vamos a darle la vuelta ¿Habéis leído o visto por la tele que este año, como los humanos no estamos por la calle ni por las carreteras, los animales están volviendo? Están apareciendo ciervos en las playas, jabalíes en las ciudades...

Pues ése es el tema de este trabajo: Cómo cambia nuestro entorno cuando los humanos nos metemos en casa. Podéis pensar en animales, en bosques, en tráfico, en el instituto ¿cómo estará sin nosotros?, los parques, el polideportivo... Es importante que penséis en lo bueno y en lo malo de que no estemos, y que penséis en cómo representarlo.

Hoy vamos a pensar y a hacer bocetos en el cuaderno. Me tenéis que enviar una foto. Planead qué vais a dibujar con espacio negativo y qué vais a dibujar con líneas, y me lo explicáis en el correo que me mandéis.

Mañana y la próxima semana haremos el dibujo.
